Onetime Texas US Congressman Steve Stockman was convicted Thursday in what prosecutors called a broad scheme to commit fraud.
The federal jury deliberated about 16 hours before finding him guilty on all but one of the 24 charges against him, for which he could receive 20 years in prison for each count.
The Republican was found guilty of defrauding conservative donors and putting their donations into personal accounts as well as campaign accounts.
His lawyers say Stockman will appeal the verdict, but the former representative was taken into custody by US marshals just after today’s verdict was read, where he’ll remain until his sentencing in August.
