The Houston Chronicle says it’s investigating the work of its former Austin bureau chief.
In an unusual editorial posted late Monday afternoon and written by Executive Editor Nancy Barnes, the newspaper stated that, in an act of transparency, it was sharing with readers that veteran Austin statehouse reporter Mike Ward has resigned after questions arose over the accuracy of at least one story Ward has written recently.
The editorial said the newspaper has hired an independent journalist to investigate Ward’s stories going back a year and perhaps more.
Ward has insisted that his reporting is accurate and his sources legitimate, the editorial says.
Ward joined the Chronicle in 2014 after years at the Austin American Statesman.
