Earthquakes in Shelby County, northeast of Nacogdoches, have resulted in the closure of an East Texas saltwater disposal site.
The Railroad Commission of Texas shut the disposal location down following a 2.5 quake Tuesday night at about 11:30, which followed a 3.2 quake nearby one week earlier.
The closed site is the Katy Saltwater Disposal area, where saltwater trucks were dumping thousands of gallons of brine.
Texas Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian told KTRE that whenever “there is seismic activity, we’ve now developed a policy in Texas that you can no longer dispose of water or even drill for oil and gas in line with a fault in the earth that we know of.”
