The number of active commercial US drilling rigs dropped by eight this week, according to Baker Hughes GE’s weekly survey released Friday.
The decline was strictly among oil rigs, which now number 877; gas rigs remained unchanged at 198.
Overall, the number of active rigs is 1,075, down about 45% from the October 2014 peak of 1,609.
Texas gained two rigs (net) for a total of 534, with 487 of them in the Permian Basin.
A sharp drop in activity was noted for California, with five rigs idled.
Two Gulf of Mexico offshore rigs were idled.
