The deepening of the Port of Corpus Christi is expected to get underway in the second quarter of this year.
Oak Brook, Illinois-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation is the first recipient of planned contracts from the Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, and the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project.
The $93 million contract to dredge the entrance channel is expected to start in April, with completion expected by early 2020.
A total of $360 million in contracts to improve the ship channel is expected to be awarded in three more phases over the next five years using a competitive bidding system, all aimed at increasing the port’s depth from 45 feet to 54 feet and widening the channel from 400 feet toi 520 feet.
The new port will be able to handle two-way traffic among supertankers with loads up to 2 million barrels of crude.
