Houston Oilman Lester Smith Has Died

Houston oilman Lester Smith has died at 76, according to a statement from his family’s foundation.

Smith was a cancer survivor; he died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday.

No funeral arrangements have been announced.

He was CEO of Smith Energy and a partner in E&P corporation SG Interests.

Smith was also a philanthropist, having given more than $150 million to the Houston Holocaust Museum, the Barbara Bush Houston Library Foundation and the March of Dimes.

He was also a major donator to the Baylor College of Medicine Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center.

In a statement, the Lester and Sue Smith Foundation said, “His core philosophy, ‘to whom much is given, much is expected,’ drove his life-long passion for giving, touching millions of lives, leaving an indelible mark on our city and world.”

He’s survived by his wife Sue, two children and seven grandchildren.
