A Texas icon is on its way out, a victim of storms last month that hit the Kilgore area.
An original wooden oil derrick symbolizing the early roots of a business that helped make Texas great is being prepared for disassembly at the East Texas Oil Museum.
A museum representative said it was damaged in a March windstorm, so damaged that curators are now concerned about its safety, despite gables and a metal undercarriage that support it.
Chris Craddock said, “We at the East Texas Oil Museum and Kilgore College will greatly miss this piece of Kilgore history.” .
“We must, of course, make the safety of our guests, employees, and volunteers at the Oil Museum a priority.”
