Deadline for TWDB Brackish Water Production Zones Passes Texas Legislature

April 3, 2019

“There is concern that the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) may be unable to meet a deadline to identify and designate brackish groundwater production zones for certain areas of Texas,” so a bill passed by the state legislature moves that deadline down by a decade.

The analysis of Sen. Van Taylor‘s SB 1041 states that the TWDB can’t meet the deadline “due to inadequate funding and limited availability of qualified contractors.”

So the Senate bill as passed now requires the TWDB to identify and designate brackish groundwater production zones for some areas of this state no later than December 1, 2032 — rather than not later than December 1, 2022.
