Electric Power Brokers Required to Register With PUC Under Senate Bill Passed Thursday

April 11, 2019

With the rise of energy brokers in Texas, a bill passed by the Texas Senate on Thursday is intended to bring such brokers into registration requirements with the Public Utility Commission.

Currently commercial retail power brokers, unlike electricity retailers and aggregators, are not required to register with the PUC, and therefore if unregistered power brokers harm customers there is no recourse for requesting action by the PUC.

Rep. Judith Zaffirini‘s SB 1497, passed through the local and uncontested Senate calendar on Thursday, acknowledges a PUC request to register brokers, thereby including their services under customer protections, disclosure and marketing rules.
